New Saddle, New Barn, New Pony?

Let me start this off by stating that I am not physically getting a new pony! For one, my bank account would officially hit the point of no return. Secondly, I have no intentions of getting rid of my crazy pony. Where else will you find a horse that refuses to eat carrots and apples and grows hair like a chia pet? No where I tell you, he is one of a kind ;)

Let me start off with an update on the barn and saddle and I will get back to the new pony part. Reno officially moves to Raleigh next Thursday! I almost can't beleive it. After months and months of waiting it is finally going to happen. Very soon it feels like. I am not sure I am all together mentally prepared for it, but I have a week to get all of my ducks in a row. It will be so good to FINALLY get to develop that bond that comes with spending hours and hours together. I am sad for him that he will be leaving Granite and the amazingness of BM's farm. I can't think of anywhere he would have been as well cared for and I am eternally grateful to her for being a pseudo horse-mom on several occassions. I think I am going to take off work next Thursday and drive up there to get him ready and then follow BM back to Raliegh. I am hoping to grab some of my stuff when I am up there this weekend so I won't have to worry about packing all of it that day. That will also give me a chance to assess what I need to buy (as there is always SOMETHING) before he gets there. I havent gotten the hauling quote from BM yet but I am sure it will put a nice dent in the finances. Thank goodness I am pulling overtime this week :)

In even more exciting news, I bought a new saddle! I know you will appreciate the beauty of a new saddle as much as I do. I get eye rolls from non-horsey people and lectures from the financially-invested since it isnt exactly in my budget. But I am planning on putting both of my saddles up for sale (since neihter fit) and if I sell one it should cover the cost of the new one. See that illogical logic at work? It serves me well on horsey-related purchases ;). The new saddle is a starter dressage saddle in a wide tree. It was uber cheap and the owner also gave me her stirrups, leathers, girh and pad in the deal. Sometimes this crappy economy has its advantages. Again, not a super nice saddle but I think it should fit Reno well and since he will probaly continue to grow it was the right price for a temporary solution. I can't wait to try it out on Saturday to see if that makes a difference in our rides. Fingers crossed...

Which leads me to the new pony. I will be interested to see how Reno is with the change in location. He has only ever been ridden on BM's farm, so I am intersted to see how he handles change. He seemed to settle in almost immediately at BM's. I think this was in large part to the pasture full of babies. He is the only younster at the new farm (at least for now) so I am curious to see how this will pan out. My hope is he starts acting more like a four year old and less like a two year old. But I won't count my chickens before they hatch!

In other horsey news Rach and I (and maybe tk?) have a date to see Secratariat this weekend! VEry excited!

  2. babies are so good at taking changes in stride. My bet is he will be happy pretty quickly again. Can't wait to see photos of the new dressage saddle (with pony and rider of course)

  3. My experience has been the same as Golden's, the babies settle in pretty quickly. I hope things go perfectly smoothly for you and Reno during the move. Definitely a good idea to pack some things up in advance. I just did that and it made moving day pretty pain free. Why is it that we need more stuff when we move? I had a list a mile long....

  4. Just think! If you sell two, you can buy another new saddle.

And probably some other stuff and still be over budget. At least, that's always how it's worked for me.
